The Board's training officer will provide for an orientation program for new directors to be accomplished within 60 days of election or appointment. Management will assist in creating/maintaining an effective orientation program.

The objectives are:

  • To familiarize them with key people
  • To familiarize them with essential corporate records
  • Teach them to read and be familiar with the financial statements and other key reports.

The Orientation program will include the following:

  • Documents (either on paper or CD) will consist of:
    • The President/CEO's contract/position description
    • Director's position description
    • Bylaws and Board policies
    • Corporate mission, vision, and current strategic plan
    • A copy of Credit Union Board of Directors Handbook
    • Copy of most recent strategic planning meeting notes
    • Annual board calendar
Within the first six weeks on the board, the new director will schedule:
  • A meeting with the:
    • CEO
    • CFO
    • Supervisory Committee Chair
  • A tour of the Credit Union's Oxon Hill facilities.
  • A tour of the NRL and Waldorf Branches (recommended by not required within the first six weeks.)

Training during a Director's first year on the board will consist of:

  • Completion of the following Volunteer Achievement Program (VAP) modules (or equivalent i.e. CUES U)
    • History and Philosophy
    • Financial Management
    • Board/ CEO Relations
    • Board of Directors Duties and Responsibilities
